Pond Turtles for New England?

Question by discdawg87: turtles for New ?
I live in South Eastern Connecticut & I have a tiny pond in my back yard. I’m not sure about gallons but it is a decent size and about three, possibly three.five feet deep in the center, prob about 6 feet long four feet wide at its largest points. I am looking to get a turtle and noticed the red-eared slider at Petco said “excellent pond turtle.” Are they ok for this climate? I know they hibernate in winter… but New England? Also, will there small claws cut by way of my rubber pond lining? If this is not the variety of turtle I want, what is? It would be excellent if you have a pond and reside in a comparable location to me. (SE, NE)
I’m looking for actual data here. Sound details in regards to the well being of an animal and his well being, not just warnings against exotic animals.

The last issue New England needs is a lot more exotic turtles. If you must get a RES, be extremely confident that there is no way it can escape; they can turn into real pests as escapees. Why not try a , such as a paint or snapper?
